The name of the Department of Apurimac, etymologically comes from the Quechua word Apu = God, Rimac = talkative; which means The God who speaks.
The department of Apurimac is located in the southern central region of Peru. The terrain is rugged department due to be located in the most remote peaks of the Andes between valleys and mountains.
The variety of its tourist and cultural attractions allows visitors to enjoy beautiful natural landscapes; besides knowing important archeological vestiges.
Abancay, Apurimac provincial capital city, is known for its beautiful valley of white lilies and famous colorful carnival; not to mention its culinary virtues. It has one of the best climates in the Peruvian highlands.
The city of Abancay is the starting point for exploring the different attractive places in the region: Curahuasi Saywite and Apurimac River Canyon. Places to practice adventure tourism.
How to get
Lima-Nasca-Puquio-Abancay. 912 km (14 hours by bus).
Lima-Ayacucho-Andahuaylas-Abancay. 956 km (22 hours by bus).
There are no regular or direct flights. It is possible to arrive by air using the Lima-Cusco (1 hour) route and then follow road on the Cusco-Abancay 198 km (4 hours and 30 minutes by car).. Festivities Carnival Abanquino and Apurimac / February-March (all the region)
During the celebrations Gang (folklore groups) show off their colorful costumes and dance to the beat of the music. Also highlighted are ceremonies honoring the Pachamama (Mother Earth), the “Court of Yunsa” (cut of a tree laden with gifts to the beat of the music) and Carnival of Tica-Pallana or pick flowers.
Sondor Raymi “Epic Chanka” / June 19 (Andahuaylas province, district Pacucha)
The celebration starts in the lagoon Pacucha with the staging of the origin and expansion of the town Chanka. Tradition has it that USQUWILLCA, mythical character emerged from the depths of the lagoon, subjected to ethnic place, after starting its expanding warrior campaign. The celebration continues in the archeological site of Sondor.

Among other activities Gamecocks championships and competitions of adventure sports like rafting in the Apurimac River, paragliding in Abancay, and mountain biking, plus develop hiking in the
National Shrine of Ampay. There are also dance festivals as the Apu-Raymi and gastronomy festivals.
Feast of the Lord of Souls / July 31 to August 3 (Aymaraes Province, district Chalhuanca)
The celebration begins with a mass and procession of the Lord of Souls. The next day takes place the “Yawar Fiesta”. During the festivities typical bands play area (Wacrapucos).
Reyna Canaveral Festival / September – Movable (Province of Chincheros)
This tourist festival takes place in the month of youth, at the beginning of spring, which is elected Queen of Canaveral, on the beaches of the Pampas river, near the town of Callebamba. Miscabamba Street, one of the oldest streets of Abancay located between Av. Nuñez and Micaela Bastidas Park, was created at the time of Independence, and there transited the Abanquinos old.
The house of David Samanez Ocampo, declared historical monument to the memory of this remarkable star of Peruvian history.
Taraccasa Ecological Park, popularly known as El Mirador. Ideal to observe the city of Abancay and Tamburco.
The National Shrine of Ampay, located 5 kilometers from Abancay. It is considered one of the natural and ecological attractions of Abancay.This natural sanctuary has a varied wildlife. Climbing, mountaineering, hiking or trekking: ideal for eco-tourism.
Ampay snowy, majestic and imposing with its two snow-capped peaks is about 5,228 and 5,221 meters
Cconoc Hot Springs, located 78 kilometers from Abancay and 120 kilometers from the city of Cusco, in the town of Curahuasi. These baths are famous for their healing powers. It has lodging services, restaurant and bar for visitors.
In the department of Apurimac there are other thermal baths; among which are: The thermal baths of Kilkata. And the forests of Puya Titankas or Raymondy and Queuña located in the province of Aymaraes which also has thermal baths Pincahuacho.
Apurimac River Canyon, located in the southwestern part of the Inka Region, 68 kilometers from Abancay. This consists of a geological geography of deep slope, it is the deepest of Peru and America and possibly the world. From an impressive height, which exceeds 5,000 m, down violently about 500 meters. Constituting one of the most beautiful and impressive performances in the region.
On the route Abancay-Cusco, deep precipices where the Apurimac River is seen flowing during the rainy and dry weather calm water is observed. The extension of the valley itself and the Apurimac basin is estimated at 350 kilometers. It is ideal for practicing adventure tourism, especially the boating place.
Stone Jail (Carcel Ccacca) located in the town of Haquira Cotabambas Province, is located in the main square of Haquira, as a stone platform (rock) of 12 meters wide by approximately 15 meters high. In the middle interior is colonial court of justice, in the lower part has carceletas for men and women. This prison of stone was used in colonial times to imprison rustlers and dangerous criminals in the colony, and those who violate the laws of the Colonial Era.
Saywite archaeological complex, ceremonial center and archeological site located in the community of Concacha, 47 kilometers from the road Abancay-Cusco.
Saywite monolith is a sedimentary stone carved in high and low relief of 2.28 meters. On the platform zoomorphic and geometric representations it is observed; like: animals, irrigations, platforms, lagoons, Paulas, steps etc.
At 300 meters away other small monoliths like Rumihuasi or stone house with stairs, geometrical shapes, channels are observed. And the Intihuatana “Sundial” that was possibly Inca observatory destined to see the astronomical movements.
Sondor archaeological complex, or called Inca site is located 21 kilometers from the city Andahuaylas. It is a ceremonial center and archeological site located in the district of Pacucha, thirty minutes from Andahuaylas. According to studies, it presents architectural elements of monumental character.
The first discovery is Muyu Muyu, Sondor sacred promontory that looks stairs and restored terraces. Climb the 500 steps to reach the top of the central pyramid, a huaca where presumably is, human sacrifice was practiced.
In the ruins of Sondor currently the Chanka epic in which their leader was Anccohuayllo who face the danger posed by the Incas for his people, decided to march on Cusco is shown.
Choquequirao archaeological complex, located 120 kilometers from the city of Andahuaylas. It is a ceremonial center and archeological site located in the department of Cusco district of Vilcabamba. Its accessibility is visited by Cachora district of the province of Abancay. It is considered as a tourist attraction rather archaeological importance.
This complex is located on the western slopes of Nevado del Salccantay, on the border between the departments of Cusco and Apurimac. It is located at an altitude of 3,500 meters, some 80 kilometers from the citadel of Machu Picchu.
